Chandler residents will discover that a number of unique and entertaining day trips are just hours away. Whether you long for outdoor spender or indoor fun, you can find great places to visit for a weekend or just an afternoon.

Explore the Great Outdoors just a Few Hours from Chandler

Picacho Peak: This repetitively-named state park (“picacho” means “peak” in Spanish) offers a gorgeous location with multiple trails. One of them, Hunter Trail, is a difficult hike, but ends at the top of the peak.

Less than 60 miles from Chandler, this park is an easy drive south. Visitors enjoy the spring wildflowers every year, which include the vibrant Mexican gold poppy, as well as brittlebush, creosote, Coulter’s lupine and globemallow.

Ironwood National Forest Monument: Just a few miles past Picacho Park on Interstate 10, you can explore this expansive, 129,000-acre desert “showcase.” Only about two hours from Chandler, you can see lots of Sonoran Desert wildlife and flora.

Visitors here can camp, ride horses, hike, visit archeological or historic sites, or just relax and soak up the unique atmosphere. Be aware that camping is primitive in this area, and there are no stores or first aid opportunities within the park.
